It’s hard to believe that Fluff has been a part of our family for over 5 years now! She was a stray in my parents neighborhood before we adopted her (Read more about Fluff’s story). I always thought it would be neat to do a DNA test to learn more about her, so a few weeks ago we decided to do the Basepaws at-home Breed + Health Cat DNA Test. This test told us more about her breed composition and dental health, and looked at 115 genetic markers including 43 genetic conditions and 25 traits to understand cats’ health and genetic illnesses and be on the lookout for anything a cat may be predisposed to.
The CatKit came in a pre-paid box and was super easy to use. The test is non invasive, just a simple swab in the mouth, and after activating online, and mailing in her sample, we got the results in a few short weeks.
The digital report notification was sent to my email, and after logging into my Basepaws account, I could view her genetic report. The genetic report we got for Fluff was very detailed, over 60 pages!
My favorite part of the report was getting to look at her linage. Fluff’s breed composition was 71% Western breeds, the highest being Maine Coon at 29.7%! Each breed that was associated with her linage came with a fact sheet where you could learn more about that breeds history, genetic predisposition and health, and personality. Fluff’s breed composition included 12 different breeds total.
The CatKit also looked at Feline genetic health markers and over 50 genetic trait markers. I am happy to report that Fluff is not a carrier or at risk for any of the tested diseases.
Last, the CatKit gave us a detailed look at her dental health. We got a score for risk of periodontal disease, risk of tooth resorption, and risk of bad breath.
Doing the Basepaws Cat DNA Test for Fluff has given me so much insight into her background and health, and will help to care for her for many years to come. Use code FLUFF to save on your Basepaws Cat DNA Test!
