I have been collecting Lilly Pulitzer since college. My first piece was a Murfee scarf in the “Flamingo Multi Lulu” print. My closet is now spilling with bright colors and beautiful prints, but sometimes I struggle to know when to wear my Lilly.
During the week, my wardrobe is restricted to my work uniform and workout clothes. On the weekends, I am often relaxing at home, running errands, or chilling with friends. So when would I wear it?
In the past, I noticed that Lilly would sit in my closet and only be worn on special occasions and fancy nights out. This saddened me because it was so pretty AND expensive! Why wasn’t I wearing it more?!
Well I am happy to say, I have finally become more comfortable with, and better at dressing down my Lilly! Part of this victory is because I have gained more pieces than just dresses. The other reason is because of denim! All hail denim!
Being a more expensive brand, I never thought to pair my Lilly with denim. I always wanted it to be dressed up. Now, the more I pair it with denim, the more I love my Lilly and the look!
Denim is very versatile. It comes in many different colors and forms: shorts, jeans, tops, jackets, overalls, and skirts. Here is how I have successfully styled my Lilly with each of these.
Shorts
I LOVE to pair my Lilly tanks, tees, tops, and popovers with jean shorts. A great super casual look you can rock at any time during the spring and this upcoming summer!
My current go to jean shorts are Girlfriend Shorts from H&M.
Overalls
I just got my first pair of overalls from a second hand store over the winter, and I am obsessed!! I prefer to pair them with a 3/4 sleeve Lilly tunic or top, but they are also fun to rock with off the shoulder tops! If you are looking for a pair of overalls, I don’t know about you, but I am totally vibing with this pair from Gap. Just make sure you get a pair with enough room in the chest pocket for your phone. So convenient!
Shirts
So I actually don’t have any true denim shirts. Instead I have chambray tops. Whats the difference? It has to do with how the thread is woven together. Basically, chambray is woven thinner; making it a more comfortable fabric for a shirt.
Lighter colored chambray can easily be paired with your brighter Lilly Pulitzer prints for a super cute casual look. In the picture above, I am wearing an older chambray top from American Eagle. But check out this similar one from Aeropostale. It’s on sale! Only $15!!
Skirts
Jean skirts are an item that have recently made a comeback in my closet. For skirts (and actually shorts too), I tend to gravitate towards medium to dark denim washes. Which I more often pair with my darker Lilly prints. I typically reach for prints that are heavy with blues and purples when styling a denim skirt. However, I have no doubt that Lilly can pair with lighter washes too! Try it out!
I am styling this A-line skirt from H&M.
Jeans and Jeggings
Not only can you wear Lilly with jeans or jeggings, but they can easily be dressed up with heels, or dressed down with flats or sandals.
I would like to take this time to tell you about my FAVORITE jeggings: Juicy Couture Flaunt It Midrise Pull-On Jegging!
They feel butter, and I want them in every color! The elastic waist band is sooo comfortable and extremely slimming. They also have them in jean material: Juicy Couture Flaunt It Seamless Midrise Skinny Jeans.
Jean Jacket
I know this sounds crazy, I got my first denim jacket only last month! I kept trying to buy one, but I could never find one I liked. I hit the jackpot in my first Stitch Fix box. My jacket is Mix by 41 Hawthorn and it is AMAZING! It’s seriously so soft and I never want to take it off! You can only get this jacket through Stitch Fix so use my link and get $25 off your first box. How to get the jacket? Just request it in your order and they will send it!
Anyways, back to how to style your jacket with Lilly. I have found it’s so easy to pop on over printed shorts and a solid color Etta tee. I also love throwing it on over my Lilly rompers and jumpsuits.
Last, and by far my favorite way to style a denim jacket is to use it as an accessory with my Lilly dresses! Simply tie it around your waist, pair it with some casual slip-on shoes; you have instantly just turned that fancy dress (best for tee shirt dresses, ex. Sophie Dress) into a causal daytime outfit!
I hope this post inspires you to start mixing and matching your Lilly Pulitzer with all of the denim in your closet! Tag me in your looks so I can check out your awesome denim style!
XOXO, Kaitlyn
